Hey guys, Welcome back to my Lets talk about Makeup series.This week I am so happy to bring you an interview with the amazingly talented Makeup artist Hannah Beattie (aka Hannah Mason Makeup Artist).
Hannah is a fully qualified Makeup Artist based in Dumfries. Whilst training at Clydebank College Hannah worked for Mac Cosmetics and done TV and magazine work before coming back to her home town Dumfries to set up her business. That was over three years ago and her business is continuing to go from strength to strength.
Hannah has always shared her skills offering one to one lessons with clients to help them learn basic techniques, but with Makeup becoming more popular thanks to social media, more and more people are desperate to further their own skills. Hannah and a fellow MUA (Laura Miller, who's work is also incredible. Check out her work here.) decided to cater to these needs and start holding Makeup masterclasses to teach a range of Makeup skills. These masterclasses are the first of its kind in Dumfries and Galloway so have been really popular with makeup lovers from beginners to experienced MUA's. Even the Beauty lecturers from the local college attended a masterclass with Hannah and Laura to update their skills. This shows not only what an incredible Makeup artist Hannah is but also Teacher.

Do you watch YouTube Beauty influencers? If so who?
I love watching YouTube Makeup Vloggers when I have the time. I find the videos so relaxing and although they don't always have a direct influence on my work it's sometimes just interesting to find out about new products. The videos I do watch definitely influence my makeup purchases. I like Lisa Eldridge, Pixiwoo, Wayne Goss, Makeup Geek and Samantha Ravndahl's YouTube channels.
What is your favourite Makeup look to do on others? Yourself?
I'm always looking for new looks to try on myself and my clients. At the moment I'm really in to big blown out eyes using matte shadows. I love nude or white liners along the inner waterline to really open the eyes up. I love to line on the top lid too. At the moment I'm using lots of MAC's Feline khol pencil. I like to build up a really slim bold line on the top lid and use a small buffing brush to really blend it in so it looks really worn in and diffused. I pile on plenty of mascara on top and bottom lashes so they look really thick and dramatic. I'd normally team that with a pair of good old Ardell Wispies, maybe even two sets on each eye for extra flutter. If it suits the client I love a dewy but natural looking base and a glossy nude lip. MAC's Modest lipgloss is my favourite gloss at the moment.
If you could only use 1 makeup brand forever what brand would you choose?
Hmm..this is hard one! I'd say NARS.
You can only take 3 Makeup items on holiday with you...what 3 would you choose?
If I could take only three items with me it would MAC's Strobe Cream, NARS Laguna Bronzer and MAC's Dirty Blonde Brow Gel
Do you have any tips for someone starting out as an MUA?
Working at MAC really helped me before I went self employed. It taught me how to work in a busy, high pressure environment, how to deal with all different types of customers as well as obviously helping me find my makeup style and confidence. So I'd say if you're looking to get in to the industry then makeup counter experience is a great help.
What is your skincare routine?
My skincare routine varies depending on how my skin is at the time. I can get really spotty. Normally I'd cleanse with Garnier's Micellar water, cleanse again with Simple face wash, use a Nip and Fab Dragon's Blood pad all over and then apply a thin layer of Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream. I absolutely love the Magic Cream, I've noticed a huge difference in the tone and plumpness in my skin since using it. I'd definitely recommend it.
What would you be doing if you weren't a Makeup artist?
If I wasn't a Makeup Artist then I'd quite like to be a Makeup Lecturer.
Any good makeup hacks? tips?
So many! I don't know where to start. My top three tips would be:
1. Look after your skin. Drink plenty of water and have a good skincare routine.
2. Know your face. Study your features to get the most from your makeup.
3. Make sure you always apply your makeup in the best, most natural lighting.
What products do you think are worth spending a bit more on?
Such a hard question to answer because there are so many amazing cheaper brands available now. Personally, I think it's worth spending a wee bit more on foundation, concealer and brushes.
What are your favourite Makeup brushes? either brand or individual brushes.
MAC brushes are brilliant. My favourites would have to be the #217 and #239 and I also love the Real Technique brushes too. MAC brushes last the longest though. I have a few in my personal brush collection which are about 6 years old. Vintage!
What was the last makeup item you purchased for yourself?
The last bit of makeup I bought for myself was the NARS 'Orgasm' blusher. It's a beauty!
You recently got married. Your makeup was beautiful! What tips do you have for brides who are doing their own makeup like yourself or MUA's who are doing bridal makeup?
Aw! Thank you! I wanted to be pretty made up so I applied a lot of makeup and I'm glad I did because it helped to define my features in photographs. I'd say to brides thinking of doing their own makeup, make sure you feel comfortable, practice loads and take lots of selfies to see how your makeup looks in photos. It's worth keeping a powder and lip colour on you or with one of your bridesmaids on your wedding day to keep everything looking nice and fresh. To MUA's applying bridal makeup, it's always important to really investigate how your bride likes and doesn't like her makeup. I like to spend ninety minutes to two hours on a bridal trial.
As a qualified MUA do you support this new trend of self taught 'MUA's'? Do you feel it is necessary to gain a formal qualification?
It's worth gaining some kind of qualification or experience before launching yourself in to the industry. It gives you more confidence as well as giving your client more confidence in you.
Favourite eyeshadow palette?
I love the ABH World Traveller palette (it was limited though. Waaaa!) and the Lime Crime Venus palette.

I love blogging! It's like a makeup diary. I haven't blogged in while actually...I'll do another one soon!
You always take such beautiful pictures of your own makeup and your clients. Do you have any tips on taking good pictures?
We use ring lights in the studio. These help to spread the light evenly over the face which makes the makeup stand out. I only take the photos on my phone and never use filters on any photos. It's definitely worth investing in a ring light or two.
